Reed Diffuser Care Guide

A reed diffuser is one of the simplest ways to keep your home beautifully fragranced throughout the day. With no flame, electricity or regular spraying required, reed diffusers provide a gentle, continuous fragrance that can quietly enhance a room from morning to evening.

A little care can make a noticeable difference to both the strength of the fragrance and how long your diffuser lasts. This reed diffuser care guide explains how to set up your diffuser, how often to flip the reeds, where to place it and how to get the best possible scent throw.

Before Using Your Reed Diffuser

Before opening your diffuser, choose a suitable place for it in the room.

  • Place the diffuser on a stable, level surface where it cannot easily be knocked over.
  • Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
  • Protect wooden, painted, polished, marble and other delicate surfaces with a coaster or small tray.
  • Keep the diffuser away from direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces and other sources of heat.
  • Always follow any specific safety or care instructions supplied with your diffuser.

How to Set Up a Reed Diffuser

Setting up a reed diffuser correctly helps the reeds absorb the fragrance oil and begin releasing scent evenly into the room.

  1. Carefully remove the bottle stopper or cap.
  2. Insert the reeds into the fragrance oil.
  3. Allow approximately 30–60 minutes for the reeds to begin absorbing the oil.
  4. For a stronger initial fragrance, carefully turn the reeds over once so the saturated ends are exposed.

Take care when handling saturated reeds, as fragrance oil can damage some surfaces.

How Many Reed Diffuser Reeds Should You Use?

The number of reeds you use affects both the intensity of the fragrance and how quickly the diffuser oil is used.

  • Small rooms: start with fewer reeds for a softer, more subtle fragrance.
  • Medium-sized rooms: use a moderate number of reeds for a balanced scent.
  • Large rooms and open-plan spaces: use more reeds for greater fragrance intensity, or consider positioning two diffusers in different parts of the room for more even coverage.

As a general rule, more reeds produce a stronger fragrance but may shorten the life of your diffuser. If your diffuser smells stronger than you would like, simply remove one or two reeds.

How Often Should You Flip Reed Diffuser Reeds?

Turning the reeds over refreshes the scent by exposing fragrance-soaked reed ends to the air. However, every time the reeds are flipped, evaporation increases, so doing it too frequently can make your diffuser run out sooner.

  • For everyday fragrance: try flipping the reeds approximately once a week or every 10–14 days.
  • For a lighter fragrance: flip them less often or use fewer reeds.
  • For a stronger fragrance: flip the reeds more frequently, bearing in mind that the diffuser oil is likely to be used more quickly.

There is no need to follow an exact timetable. Room temperature, airflow, the fragrance itself and the number of reeds can all affect how strongly a diffuser performs.

How to Flip Reed Diffuser Reeds Without Making a Mess

  1. Make sure your hands are clean and dry.
  2. Place the diffuser on a protected surface.
  3. Carefully turn the reeds over, preferably one or a few at a time.
  4. Allow any excess oil to drip back into the bottle before fully removing each reed.
  5. Wipe away any fragrance oil from the neck or outside of the bottle immediately.
  6. Wash your hands after handling the reeds.

Where Is the Best Place to Put a Reed Diffuser?

Where you position your reed diffuser can have a surprisingly large effect on how noticeable the fragrance is.

A location with gentle natural airflow can help distribute fragrance around the room. Hallways, entranceways, shelves and console tables can all work well, depending on the layout of your home.

  • Try placing the diffuser somewhere air naturally circulates through the room.
  • Avoid strong draughts from frequently opened windows, extractor fans or air-conditioning systems if you want the diffuser to last longer.
  • Keep it away from radiators and other direct heat sources.
  • Avoid bright, sunny windowsills where heat and sunlight can increase evaporation.

How to Make a Reed Diffuser Last Longer

If you want to extend the life of your reed diffuser, a few simple changes can help reduce the rate at which the fragrance oil evaporates.

  • Keep the diffuser away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Use fewer reeds if the existing fragrance strength is sufficient.
  • Flip the reeds less frequently.
  • Avoid positioning the diffuser in a strong draught.
  • Do not shake the bottle.

Remember that reed diffusers naturally evaporate over time. Warmer rooms, increased airflow and using more reeds will generally increase fragrance intensity but can also reduce longevity.

When Should You Replace Reed Diffuser Reeds?

Over time, diffuser reeds can become saturated, dusty or less effective at drawing fragrance oil through the reed.

Consider replacing your reeds if:

  • The fragrance becomes noticeably weaker even after turning the reeds.
  • The reeds appear dusty, clogged or discoloured.
  • You are changing to a different fragrance.

Using fresh reeds with a refill can often provide a better scent throw than continuing to use old reeds.

Can You Reuse Reed Diffuser Reeds With a Different Fragrance?

We recommend using new reeds whenever you change fragrance. Old reeds retain fragrance oil, so reusing them with another scent can mix the two fragrances and may also reduce performance.

If you are reusing the diffuser bottle or vessel, clean it thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before adding the new fragrance oil. Always check the individual product instructions first, as not every diffuser vessel is intended to be refilled.

Why Has My Reed Diffuser Stopped Smelling?

If you can no longer smell your diffuser as strongly as before, it does not necessarily mean the fragrance has stopped working.

Try the following:

  • Carefully flip the reeds to refresh the scent.
  • Replace old or dusty reeds.
  • Add more reeds if suitable for the diffuser.
  • Move the diffuser to an area with gentle airflow.
  • Check that it is not positioned in a space that is too large for one diffuser.

You may also become accustomed to a fragrance after being around it for a long time. This is sometimes known as olfactory adaptation, where a familiar scent becomes less noticeable even though it is still present in the room.

Reed Diffuser Safety and Surface Care

Fragrance oils can mark or damage certain surfaces, so care should always be taken when setting up and maintaining your diffuser.

  • Always place your diffuser on a coaster, tray or other suitable protective surface.
  • Wipe up spills and drips immediately, following the care guidance appropriate for the affected surface.
  • Keep diffuser oil away from skin and eyes.
  • Wash your hands after handling fragrance-soaked reeds.
  • Keep the diffuser away from naked flames, sparks and other sources of ignition.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always follow the safety information and warnings supplied with the individual product.
