How to Patch Test London Brow Tint and Lash Lift Products

A patch test helps you find out whether a client is likely to react to a tint, dye, perm or lash adhesive before you use it on them. This guide covers when to test, how long to wait and what to record.

Written by The Foalyard from patch testing guidance published by The London Brow Company, the maker of the London Brow professional range. Always read and follow the instructions supplied with each product.

Why patch testing matters

A patch test protects your client and your business. Skipping one could cost you a client, and could put you and your business at legal risk.

What is a patch test?

It's a small skin test that shows whether a client is allergic to a product you plan to use on them. Apply a small amount of the product to the skin. For example:

  • Leg wax: a hair-free area, such as the wrist.
  • Dye (general product tests): the client's lower or upper arm.
  • Eyelash and eyebrow tint: ideally the inside of the elbow.

Then wait before checking the area for any reaction.

How long does a patch test take?

  • Whichever method you use, wait at least 24 hours to see any reaction.
  • Where possible, The London Brow Company recommends patch testing 48–72 hours before treatment.
  • Some products, such as London Speed-lift, have their own stricter timings, so always follow the instructions for the product you're using.
  • Each product has its own rules on how, when and how often to patch test. Read the product instructions and follow them.

How often should I repeat a patch test?

  • If the manufacturer says a patch test is required, you won't always have to repeat it before every appointment.
  • Always test the first time a client tries a new product.
  • It's a good idea to repeat the test at least every few months, or if the client has had any medical changes.
  • For clients who don't have the treatment regularly, your insurance provider sets how long you can leave between tests. Contact them to find out.

Patch testing rules and your insurance

No law says you must patch test before a treatment. But if the manufacturer says a patch test is required and you don't do one, most insurers won't cover you.

  • Test with the same product you'll use for the treatment.
  • Never go ahead without a patch test, even if the client signs a waiver or insists they don't need one. The responsibility stays with you, even if you let them sign a waiver.
  • If the test causes any reaction at all, however small, and you still go ahead, you won't be covered.

Which London Brow products need a patch test?

The London Brow Company recommends patch testing before treatment with these London Brow products:

  • Perming Lotion
  • Neutralising Lotion
  • Eyebrow tint / dye
  • Eyelash tint / dye
  • Eyelash lifting adhesive

What can happen if you skip the patch test?

Your client could have a serious reaction, such as:

  • an itchy rash
  • painful localised swelling
  • in extreme cases, eyes so swollen they can't see
  • in extreme cases, trouble breathing
  • in extreme cases, a skin reaction bad enough to leave permanent facial scarring

Claims add up quickly. If a client is off work for weeks after a reaction, or is left with a scar, a claim can cost thousands of pounds. Many small businesses and self-employed therapists don't have that money set aside. A bad review can also lose you future clients.

How to protect your clients and your business

  1. Where the manufacturer says a patch test is needed, always test the first time a client tries the product.
  2. Keep testing them regularly while they continue to use it.
  3. Record every patch test, and ask the client to sign to confirm it was done.

This helps your clients avoid reactions and helps keep you covered. Testing every time also builds trust: clients can see you're taking care of their health and wellbeing.

Does a clear patch test guarantee no reaction?

No. A patch test is the most you can do to predict whether a client is sensitive to any ingredient in the product. Even if the patch test shows no reaction, a client can still react after treatment. If you've taken every precaution before treatment, you've done all you can. Check with your insurer that you're covered if a client still reacts.

Do I need a consultation form as well?

Yes, for every new client.

  • Start with an initial consultation, and ask the client to complete a full consultation form.
  • The form explains the risks of the treatment. The client's signature confirms they're happy with those risks.
  • A consultation form must never replace a patch test. It won't limit your liability if you accidentally injure a client.
  • Some products still need a patch test for you to qualify for insurance.
  • Record every patch test and its result on the consultation form, so your records are always complete.

Do I need insurance to tint or dye eyebrows?

Insurance is always recommended when you work with the public, especially when you use chemicals on clients. If a treatment causes a client injury or illness, hair and beauty treatment liability insurance covers you. Policies don't cover every treatment, so ask your insurer to confirm that yours includes the treatments you offer.
