Ammobium Dried | Winged Everlasting | Norfolk 50-70cm

Half the pleasure of Ammobium is in the stems. The tiny white papery flowers with their bright yellow centres are lovely enough — small button daisies, no bigger than 1-2cm across, dozens per stem. But the stems themselves carry a distinctive feature that gives the plant its botanical name: Ammobium alatum, "winged Ammobium," referring to the fine papery flanges that run along the length of each stem like silver-white wings. Combined, the winged stems and papery button flowers create a silhouette you won't find anywhere else in the dried flower world — delicate, silvery, architecturally interesting, and one of the most reliable "everlasting" flowers ever cultivated.

Barn-dried at Salle Moor Hall, Norfolk. Bunches of 6 stems, each 50-70cm long, with the distinctive winged stems preserved through drying alongside the small white flower clusters. Hand-harvested at peak bloom when the flowers are freshly open and the yellow centres are at their brightest, then hung upside-down in the barn to dry naturally. Grown chemical-free on our own cutting field. What "Winged Everlasting" means

Both parts of the common name capture something real about the plant:

• Winged — the stems have fine papery flanges running along their length that look like small silvery-white wings. Not decorative additions to the plant, but part of the natural leaf structure fused to the stem. Give the whole plant a distinctive architectural quality that's genuinely unusual in dried floristry
• Everlasting — Ammobium is one of the "true everlastings," a small family of plants whose flowers are naturally papery and dry as they grow, meaning the drying process essentially just accelerates what the flower would do on its own. The result is exceptional durability — these flowers hold their character for years without any care beyond keeping them out of direct sunlight

The combination is genuinely rare: most dried flowers are either colourful-but-delicate or durable-but-plain. Ammobium gives you delicate-looking flowers with architectural stems

Styling ideas

• Cottage bouquet filler — the primary role. Slotted between statement flowers (Craspedia, Amaranthus, Alliums) or dried grasses, Ammobium provides the small papery flowers plus the silvery structural line that makes a mixed bouquet feel complete rather than crowded
• All-white wedding arrangements — the yellow centres are just enough colour to prevent an all-white scheme from reading flat. Combines beautifully with Achillea 'Ballerina', Feverfew, and dried grasses for bridal work
• Delicate wreaths — the wiry winged stems bend easily into wreath rings, and the small flowers provide focal detail without dominating. Particularly good for spring and summer wreaths
• Modern minimalist single-species — five or seven stems in a plain glass bottle standing alone. The winged stems + papery flowers create sculptural interest with just this one variety

Perfect dried companions

• Dried Feverfew — the close-relative pairing. Similar small white flowers with yellow centres, but softer texture. The two together provide subtle variation on a theme
• Dried Achillea 'Ballerina' — the cloud-vs-line contrast. Ballerina provides the soft cloud filler; Ammobium provides the same colour palette but with structural line
• Dried Acroclinium — the papery textural partnership. Both are true everlastings with papery character, but Acroclinium is more textured and coloured while Ammobium is smaller and more silvery. Together they build an "all-papery" arrangement theme
• Dried Bunny Tails and grasses — the soft plush contrast against Ammobium's delicate architectural stems. Standard bouquet pairing that reads well at any scale
• Dried Craspedia Billy Buttons — the yellow-echo pairing. Craspedia's bright yellow spheres pick up the yellow centres of Ammobium's small flowers, creating colour continuity through the arrangement
• Dried Alliums (any grade) — the statement partnership. Ammobium's delicate scale provides the perfect textural foil for the giant architectural allium heads

Care note. Ammobium is among the most durable dried flowers in the range — the naturally papery flowers and firm winged stems resist normal handling without concern. Keep out of direct sunlight to preserve the silvery-white stem colour and the bright yellow flower centres (both of which will fade toward pale straw under prolonged sunlight). Handle from the base of the bunch. Store dry, away from steam and damp. Expect years of use given proper care.

Growing your own. Ammobium alatum is one of the easier hardy annuals to grow from seed — direct-sown in April or May in full sun and well-drained soil, it produces plants of 60-80cm with continuous flowering from July through early autumn. Ideal for cutting fresh or drying — the flowers dry beautifully on the plant if left, or can be cut when just fully open and hung to dry indoors. Bees and hoverflies work the small flowers throughout summer.
