A hand-carved Ashanti doll from Ghana. Known as fertility dolls (akuaba), these are among the most recognisable pieces of West African art, traditionally carried for luck and fertility, and — alongside the Ashanti stool — an important cultural object. Each is hand-carved, so no two are quite alike.
