A hand-carved Fang Ngil mask from Gabon. The Fang are renowned for their white-faced Ngil masks — elegant, abstract faces with a distinctive heart-shaped hollow, refined curved brows and a long tapering nose. Worn by members of the Ngil society at initiations and to confront wrongdoers, the masqueraders would appear in the village after dark, in raffia costume and torchlight.
