Glyceria maxima, commonly known as reed sweet-grass, is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial with tall, arching green leaves forming dense tussocks along pond edges and in shallow water. In summer, it produces slender, drooping panicles of greenish-brown flowers above the foliage, adding subtle texture rather than showy blooms.
This species is valuable for wetland biodiversity, providing shelter for small wildlife and stabilising pond margins and damp soils. Its upright, spreading habit and tolerance of consistently wet or waterlogged conditions make it ideal for pond edges, streamsides, and naturalistic water garden schemes.
