Morning Glory 'Heavenly Blue' Seeds
Huge, saucer-shaped azure-blue trumpets that unfurl in the morning sun. This vigorous vine is the ultimate fast-growing 'screen' plant, capable of covering a trellis or arch in weeks with a lush, vertical display.
'Heavenly Blue' is arguably the most beautiful climber you can grow from seed. It is a vigorous, twining vine that covers itself in huge, saucer-shaped trumpet flowers (up to 10cm across) in an intense, clear shade of azure-blue with a creamy white throat.
True to its name, this plant greets the day. The buds unfurl into spectacular blooms in the morning sun, fading gently as the afternoon heat sets in, only to be replaced by hundreds of fresh new flowers the next morning. It is the perfect "screen" plant—fast-growing, lush, and capable of covering a trellis, arch, or ugly fence in a matter of weeks.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Ipomoea tricolor 'Heavenly Blue' is a Half-Hardy Annual (H1c). Originating from the tropical regions of Mexico and Central America, it is a true heat-seeker. It completes its entire impressive life cycle—climbing up to 3 metres—in just a single UK summer season.
Twining Habit: Unlike Ivy or Hydrangea, Morning Glory does not have suction cups or tendrils. It is a "twiner," meaning the entire stem spirals around its support. It requires thin structures to grip, such as trellis, garden twine, or netting, rather than a solid flat wall.
AGM Status: This variety is a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. This is the highest accolade in UK horticulture, awarded only to plants that are reliable, vigorous, and exceptionally beautiful in a garden setting.
🌱 Growing Guide
Morning Glory seeds have a very tough outer coat. To ensure successful germination, soak the seeds in tepid water for 12-24 hours before sowing to soften the shell.
How to Sow:
Sow indoors from March to April. Sow one seed per individual 9cm pot, about 1cm deep. They have very sensitive roots and strongly dislike being moved, so starting them in individual pots prevents transplant shock. Keep at a consistent 20-25°C; seedlings typically appear in 7-14 days.
Where to Plant:
Only plant out in June when all risk of frost has passed and the soil is warm. They demand a sheltered, full-sun position—ideally against a south or west-facing wall where the heat is retained. They are thirsty plants, so mulch the base well to lock in moisture.
Ongoing Care:
Once they begin to spiral, guide the young stems toward their support. Regular watering is essential during dry spells. Do not over-fertilise with high-nitrogen feeds, as this will result in massive leaves but very few of those iconic azure-blue trumpets.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
Morning Glory's intense blue looks spectacular when paired with contrasting climbers or warm-toned border plants from our range:
- ☕ Cup & Saucer Vine (Cobaea): The Day & Night Duo. Morning Glory blooms spectacularly in the morning sun, while Cobaea flowers remain open and change colour into the evening. Growing them on the same archway ensures your vertical space is alive with colour from dawn till dusk.
- 🍂 Rudbeckia 'Autumn Forest': The Colour Clash. Plant these golden-orange daisies at the base of your blue Morning Glory. The electric contrast between the orange petals and azure-blue trumpets is a classic, high-impact cottage garden look.
