Where natural science meets beautiful craft, you find beeswax. The Curious Minds Beeswax candle kit is a STEAM kit for adults.
Beeswax is one of the most scientifically fascinating natural materials on earth. It is hydrophobic, antimicrobial, and thermoplastic. It has a precise melting point of 64°C. It is produced by young worker bees from glands on the underside of their bodies — a colony must consume approximately ten pounds of honey to produce one pound of wax. The hexagonal geometry of the comb it builds was mathematically proven in 1999 to be the most efficient way to divide a surface into equal areas. The bees solved that problem considerably earlier.
This kit gives you four ways to work with beeswax — each one demonstrating a different scientific property of the material.
Four techniques. Four properties.
Rolled candles — thermoplasticity At room temperature, beeswax sheets are pliable enough to roll by hand. No heat required. The warmth of your hands is sufficient. This is thermoplasticity — the property that allows a material to be shaped when warm and hold its form when cool.
Rolled tapered candles — geometry and structure A single beeswax sheet, cut diagonally and rolled from the shortest edge, produces a naturally tapered candle. The geometry of the taper emerges from the shape of the material, not from any mould. The result is structurally stable because the wider base provides a lower centre of gravity.
Floating candles — hydrophobicity Beeswax repels water. A disc of beeswax shaped with the warmth of your fingertips into a shallow bowl will float indefinitely — because of the same molecular property that makes beeswax an effective waterproofing agent and an ideal ingredient in lip balm.
Poured tea lights — phase transition Melt beeswax pellets at 64°C — a precise phase transition from solid to liquid — and pour into moulds. As the liquid wax cools, crystalline structures form and the candle solidifies. This is the same process that has been used to make high quality candles for centuries: beeswax candles were historically expensive luxuries, reserved for the wealthiest households, while the poor made do with tallow rendered from animal fat.
About the Curious Minds bees Dr Wendy Hamilton, our CEO and a lifelong naturalist, manages native honeybee colonies on the West Coast of Scotland. The apiary sits among wildflowers and Linden trees on the Scottish coastline, where the bees forage freely on the natural flora. This kit was designed by a practising beekeeper who understands the colony, the comb, and the material it produces — not by a company that has chosen bees as a decorative motif.
A practical contribution to bee conservation Native honeybee populations are in serious decline due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Pollinators support the food chains that sustain us — without sufficient bees to pollinate crop species, our food supply is directly affected.
Every kit includes a packet of native British wildflower seeds — thirty species specifically selected because British honeybees harvest nectar from locally-native plants. Not generic wildflower seeds. The actual species that British pollinators need: cornflower, ox-eye daisy, wild foxglove, common poppy, borage, ragged robin, bird's-foot trefoil, viper's bugloss, and more. Plant them in your garden, or ask a neighbour. The bees will find them.
