    Nigella 'Miss Jekyll Blue' Seeds

Semi-double, sky-blue flowers nestled in a ruff of fine, fennel-like foliage. This award-winning 'Love-in-a-Mist' creates a romantic blue haze in the border, followed by magnificent purple-striped seed pods that stand tall through autumn.

If there is one flower that defines the "English Cottage Garden," it is this. 'Miss Jekyll Blue' is the classic, award-winning variety of Love-in-a-mist, producing semi-double, sky-blue flowers that sit nestled in a ruff of fine, fennel-like foliage.

From a distance, a drift of these plants looks like a blue haze or mist floating above the ground. But the show doesn't end when the petals fall. The centre of the flower swells into a magnificent, balloon-like seed pod striped with purple. These architectural pods stand tall through autumn and are one of the most sought-after elements for dried flower arranging.

    🌿 Understanding the Plant

Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll Blue' is a Hardy Annual (H3). It is perhaps the most famous variety of its kind, named after the legendary British garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, who considered it a staple for softening the rigid edges of formal garden borders.

Award-Winning Performance: This variety holds the prestigious **RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM)**, signifying its reliability, disease resistance, and outstanding contribution to the UK garden landscape.

Nature's Self-Sower: Nigella is a "generous guest." If you allow the seed pods to ripen and split on the plant, they will naturally scatter their seeds, providing you with a fresh haze of blue flowers the following spring with absolutely no additional effort or cost.

    🌱 Growing Guide

Nigella is one of the easiest "scatter and grow" seeds, making it a perfect variety for beginners or for adding quick colour to a new cottage garden.

    How to Sow:
Sow directly outdoors in September (for earlier, larger plants next spring) or March to May for a summer display. Prepare the soil to a fine tilth and scatter seeds thinly. Cover lightly with 3mm of compost—they prefer a shallow burial to germinate. Seedlings typically emerge in 14-21 days.

    Where to Plant:
They prefer full sun or light shade. They are remarkably unfussy about soil quality and will flourish even in poor, sandy, or gravelly ground. Avoid rich fertilizers, as this tends to produce excessive green foliage (the "mist") at the expense of those classic sky-blue blooms.

    Ongoing Care:
The most important step for a professional look is thinning. Once seedlings reach 5cm, thin them to 20cm apart to allow the plants to become bushy rather than spindly. If you want a non-stop supply of flowers for jam-jar arrangements, deadhead regularly. If you want the purple-striped seed pods for drying, leave the flowers to set seed naturally.

    • ☁️ Gypsophila 'Covent Garden': The Cloud Effect. For a pure, dreamy cottage look, mix Nigella with the frothy white clouds of Gypsophila. Both plants have an airy, delicate texture that looks like a wedding bouquet growing in the soil.
