'Miss Jekyll White' is the pure, snowy sister of the classic blue Love-in-a-mist. It produces beautiful, semi-double white flowers that sit nestled in a ruff of fine, fennel-like foliage. From a distance, a drift of these plants looks like a low-hanging cloud or a sea of foam.
This is a plant of two halves. In early summer, it is soft, romantic, and frothy—perfect for wedding bouquets and cottage borders. But as the petals fall, the centre of the flower swells into a magnificent, balloon-like seed pod. Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll White' is a Hardy Annual (H3). It is named after the legendary British garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, who famously used Nigella to soften the edges of her formal borders with its misty, ethereal foliage.
The Generous Guest: Nigella is one of the most prolific self-seeders in the UK garden. If you allow the pods to dry on the plant in late summer, they will eventually split and scatter their black seeds. This ensures you have a fresh drift of "Love-in-a-mist" appearing the following spring for free!
Wildlife Magnet: Listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, its complex flowers are rich in nectar and a mid-summer favourite for honeybees. The seed pods also provide a valuable food source for birds, especially goldfinches, during the autumn months.
🌱 Growing Guide
Nigella is one of the easiest "scatter and grow" seeds, making it a perfect project for beginners or busy UK gardeners.
How to Sow:
Sow directly outdoors in September (for earlier, larger plants the next year) or March to May. Scatter seeds thinly onto raked soil and cover very lightly with about 3mm of compost—they prefer a light covering to settle. Germination typically takes 14-21 days.
Where to Plant:
They thrive in full sun or light shade. They are remarkably unfussy and will even grow in gravel gardens or poor soil. Avoid over-feeding with rich fertilisers, as this will produce lots of green "mist" (foliage) but very few of those elegant snowy-white flowers.
Ongoing Care:
They are very low maintenance and rarely need staking. If you want a continuous supply of flowers for posies, deadhead regularly. If you want the large, decorative balloon seed pods for winter drying, leave the flowers alone and allow them to set seed naturally.
