Verbena bonariensis is one of those plants that quietly steals the show. Tall, airy stems hold clusters of tiny purple flowers that seem to float above the border, catching the light beautifully and adding a lovely sense of movement. It’s perfect for weaving through other plants, softening edges, and creating that natural, relaxed look that bees and butterflies can’t resist.

This long-flowering perennial blooms from summer right into autumn, bringing months of colour when much of the garden is starting to fade. Despite its delicate look, it’s surprisingly tough and low maintenance once established.

Sunlight: Prefers full sun, but will tolerate light shade
Soil: Well-drained soil is essential – Verbena doesn’t like sitting in winter wet
Position: Ideal for borders, gravel gardens, or mixed with ornamental grasses
Hardiness: Hardy in most parts of the UK, though may self-seed freely in mild winters
Height & Spread: Up to 1.5m tall and 0.5m spread

Many garden designers recommend planting Verbena in groups of three for a balanced, cohesive look. It helps the plants stand out together and creates a lovely flow in your garden. But don't worry—this plant also looks great on its own or in smaller groupings!
